A stand-alone gas station may qualify while fuel sold by a warehouse club, supermarket, or superstore may not. Convenience stores and automated pumps can also code differently. The issuer’s current merchant definition is the final rule.
Compare the gas card’s reward rate with the rate from a card you already have. Multiply the difference by your expected yearly eligible gas spend, then subtract any annual fee. This shows the extra value created by the gas category.
If gas is a small part of your budget, a card that also rewards groceries, dining, transit, or general purchases may create more total value. EV drivers should check whether charging is named as an eligible category instead of assuming it is included.
Not always. Warehouse clubs and their fuel stations can be excluded or coded differently. Check both the issuer terms and the merchant category shown on past transactions.
Only when the card’s current terms include eligible EV charging or the charging network receives a qualifying merchant code.
It is most useful when your eligible gas spending is high enough for the extra rewards to beat a strong flat-rate card after fees and caps.
